Das Leben der Anderen

I caught The Life of Others at the Red Vic tonight. I really enjoyed the movie; the story had a strong emotional impact while still being very thought provoking.

It’s odd that the secret police when through so much trouble to spy and collect evidence when it seems the investigation was largely initiated over personal motives. If the minister really wanted to get the writer out of the way, couldn’t he just plant the evidence or just make him "disappear"? Was there a limit to the minister’s power? Or do humans need to go through so much effort to create credibility or the right punishment. Strangely I had sense of deja vu when HGW was talking to his superior; it would ripe material for a sadistic version of The Office.

HGW’s sacrifice is amazing to me. How did someone who believed in the socialist system become so  disillusioned by the people who (ab)use the system? Was he such an idealist after all those years of life? Even if his own life seemed empty, did he take so much pleasure in saving these people? Such a tragic character.
